Stop Selling What You Do

If you’ve ever felt like you’re doing everything right but still struggling to fill your programs or sign consistent clients, this one is for you. The problem usually isn’t your skills, your experience, or even your pricing. It’s that you’re selling the wrong thing entirely. In Episode 68 of The Flow Lane, I’m breaking down why the most talented practitioners are often the worst marketers, and exactly what to do about it. This is the shift that changes everything.

Here’s something I want you to really hear: it’s not your fault. You trained to be a healer, a yoga teacher, a breathwork facilitator, a Chinese medicine practitioner. You became deeply skilled at the delivery of your work. Nobody handed you a marketing degree alongside your certification.

So when selling feels cringe or manipulative, I get it. But I want you to reframe that completely. Selling is clarity. Selling is an invitation. It is an act of service, just like the work you do with your clients. When you communicate clearly, you help the right people find their way into the right offer to get the outcome they’re actually looking for. That’s not pushy. That’s generous.

The real issue is that most practitioners lead with what they do instead of what changes for the person on the other side. Nobody wakes up thinking “I need nervous system regulation.” They wake up thinking “I cannot keep losing my patience with my kids” or “I’m exhausted all the time and I need this to stop.” That felt experience, that identity shift, is what people are actually buying.

Let me be really direct here. You think you’re selling breathwork, hormone balancing, or stress reduction. But what your clients are actually buying is better sleep, confidence at work, patience with their children, feeling safe in their body, and energy to actually live their life.

This distinction is everything. I’ve seen incredibly experienced practitioners lose clients to people with a fraction of their training, simply because those people understood how to articulate outcomes in a language their audience could feel. Your job is to translate your genius into client language. When you make that shift, everything changes.

A simple exercise: take your current offer description and ask yourself, “So what does that mean for someone’s actual life?” Keep asking until you land on the real, felt transformation. That’s what belongs in your marketing.

If individual sessions are your only offer, you’re likely stuck in a cycle of inconsistent income, constant lead generation, and that exhausting question of “where is my next client coming from?”

I worked with a Chinese medicine doctor who was genuinely exceptional at supporting women on their fertility journey. But she was over-delivering in single sessions, leaving clients feeling like they had enough information to go it alone, and then never seeing them again. We built a three to six month fertility package that included treatments, telehealth check-ins, and ongoing support. The result? Better outcomes for clients, more referrals, higher revenue, and she was actually working less because she wasn’t just trading time for money.

Packaging your work into a clear start-to-finish container creates better results for your clients, boosts your referrals, and gives you the structure and energetic return you deserve. People don’t want options, they want certainty. A well-named, outcome-focused package gives them exactly that.

Think about it this way: three sessions becomes “Reset Your Sleep in 21 Days.” Monthly one-on-ones become the “Calm CEO Container.” Same work, transformed positioning.

Here’s a truth that might sting a little: if you’re only on Instagram, you’re optional. I’m not saying delete the app. I’m saying that one platform is one room in a very large building, and your audience might be in several other rooms at the same time.

Podcasts, YouTube, LinkedIn, speaking opportunities, platforms like Insight Timer if you’re in the wellness space, all of these expand your reach and borrow credibility in ways that compound over time. Think strategically about where your actual people are spending time, and show up there with intention.

Collaboration is one of the most underused growth strategies I see. Years ago, I created an event series called Mindful Mornings, bringing together 80 people each month for yoga, meditation, live music, and breakfast. We filled that room consistently because we collaborated with high-caliber teachers who brought their communities with them. Everyone won. The key principles: make it a genuine exchange, spotlight your collaborators generously, and always have your next offer ready before the current momentum fades. That last part is a huge missed opportunity for so many people.

This one is close to my heart. If you work in the calm, health, or mindset space but your own life feels chaotic, people can feel that. Embodiment builds trust far more than beautiful branding ever will.

I’ll be the first to admit it: I was at my most stressed when I was teaching yoga full time. There is nothing ironic about it in the moment, but looking back, the congruency gap was real. When you genuinely embody what you teach, it comes through in your content, your conversations, and your energy in a room. Your nervous system either does the selling for you or it leaks doubt into everything.

Share from the scar, never the wound. Show your journey with honesty and from a grounded place. That authenticity is magnetic in a way that no reel or caption can manufacture.

Before you close this tab, I want to leave you with the five-step framework I break down in the episode:

1. Desire: What does your client actually want?
2. Outcome: What specifically changes when they work with you?
3. Identity: Who do they become on the other side?
4. Container: What delivery method gets them the best results?
5. Proof: What testimonials, results, and receipts build trust?

If this landed for you, I would genuinely love to hear how you’re currently positioning yourself. Head over to Instagram and DM me the word “positioned” and I’ll take a look at your page and give you my first suggestion for shifting your offer language. No strings, just support, because helping heart-centered people earn more and reach more people is exactly the mission I’m on.
